Event Judging

Event Judging is the most important task for any event staff member.  Judges are tasked with scoring all the autos at a judged event.

Judging is performed using a smartphone or tablet with an internet connection (wifi or cellular data).

Judges and Head Judges must be invited to act as a Judge or Head Judge for events by the Event Administrator.  Once the Event Administrator has invited you, you should receive an email notification of the invitation as well as your login information.  The Event Administrator can also retrieve your login information should you not have access to your email account.

Autos can be scored by any judge or head judge and autos can be scored by multiple judges, creating an 'average' score for the auto.

Supported Event Judging Formats

Car Show Pro supports Traditional Judging, Freestyle Judging & Concours Judging methods:

  • Traditional Judging: Each judge must provide a value for each judging criteria (i.e. Interior, Exterior, Engine, Overall).  This is the default option for newly created events.
  • Freestyle Judging: Judges may skip judging criteria during scoring.  This is a good solution for 'team' judging, where one judge may score one aspect of the auto (i.e. Interior), while another judge scores another aspect of the auto (i.e. Exterior).  An aggregate score is created for the auto.
    • NOTE: It is possible to have incomplete scores for an auto, if one aspect of the auto is scored (i.e. Interior) but other aspects have not been scored (i.e. Exterior, Engine, Overall).  This will result in an artificially low score, due to missing values for 'skipped' judging criteria.
  • Concours Judging: Judges use a 'point deduction' system.  Each participant starts with a 'perfect score'.  For each demerit or defect, a point (or partial point) is deducted.  In a Concours event, generally there are multiple judges scoring various aspects of the auto (similar to 'team' judging above.  As a result, judges involved in a Concours event in Car Show Pro can also 'skip' judging criteria.
Generally speaking, Concours judging is utilized on very high-end judging competitions.
    • Event administrators of Concours events select the minimum point deduction value to be used during scoring: 1 point, 0.50 point or 0.25 point
    • NOTE: As with Freestyle Judging, it is possible to have incomplete scores for an auto, if one aspect of the auto is scored (i.e. Interior) but other aspects have not been scored (i.e. Exterior, Engine, Overall).  This will result in an artificially low score, due to missing values for 'skipped' judging criteria.

Types of Judges

Head Judge / Lead Judge / Master Judge

The Head Judge generally oversees the judging process at the event.  Head Judges can score autos as well as monitor and modify any other judges' score.  They can also clear the scoring for one judge or all judges as well as 'break ties' where required by modifying one or more scores for an auto or set of autos.  Depending on the size of the event, at least one judge should be designated as the Head Judge.

  • There is no limit to the number of Head Judges that can be created for the event.
  • Head Judges can also do everything a Judge can do.
  • The terms 'Head Judge' , 'Lead Judge' or 'Master Judge' may be used throughout the site.

Judge

Judges are tasked with scoring autos in the event.  Judges can score autos and change their score, however, they cannot see other judge's scores (this is to provide the judge with an 'unbiased'  view of the auto before judging).  Judges cannot edit or clear scores for other judges, nor can they 'break ties'.

  • There is no limit to the number of Judges that can be created for the event.

How to Judge

Judges (or Head Judges) can score an auto one using one of two available methods:

1)  Scanning the QR Code on the participant's Dashcard

(The easiest and quickest method to judge an auto)

Judging is performed as follows:

  1. Open your QR Code reader (also known as a QR Code Scanner) on your smartphone or tablet. (for more information about QR Codes, view our article on QR Codes)
  2. Scan the Judges Only QR Code on the bottom right of the Dashcard.  You will be prompted to log in the first time (if not already logged in).  If you do not know your login information, contact the Event Administrator.  Once logged in, the page to score the auto is automatically displayed.  If the Score Auto page is not displayed, simply scan the QR Code again.
  3. If an Auto Classification has not been selected, you will be required to select the Auto Classification for that auto.  Otherwise the Judging Criteria for that Auto Classification will be displayed below, with a name for each Judging Criteria and a drop-down to select a value.  NOTE: Each Judging Criteria will have a maximum value displayed below the drop-down.  Judging Criteria were previously set by the Event Administrator.
  4. Select a corresponding value for the first Judging Criteria.  On smartphones and tablets, a list of values should display at the bottom of the screen.  Select the value which best represents the value for the Judging Criteria for that auto.
  5. Use the right arrow or down arrow (varies between Operating Systems and Browsers) to move to the next Judging Criteria.
  6. Repeat for all remaining Judging Criteria.  Once all Judging Criteria have been populated, the Submit button will be enabled.
  7. Press the Submit button to complete the scoring for that auto.  You're done! You will be returned to the Judge Autos page.

As long as you do not close down your QR Code reader or browser, you should not be prompted to log in the next time you want to score an auto. This means you can put your smartphone or tablet to 'sleep' mode between judging to save battery power. Just don't close the QR Code reader or browser to remain logged into the system.

2)  Manually searching for an Auto ID

To manually search for autos:

  1. Log into the Car Show Pro website: https://carshowpro.com. If you do not know your login information, contact the Event Administrator.
  2. You will be directed to your Dashboard after logging in.  You can access the Event Administration page by clicking on the Event Administration link in the left sidebar or by clicking the View Details button under the Event Administration box.  A list of events is displayed that you have been invited to act as a Judge or HeadJudge.  If no events are displayed, please see the Event Administrator to ensure they have added you to the Event Staffing tab.
  3. Under the event to be judged, click the Judge Autos button.  You will see the Judge Autos page where a list of autos to be judged (as well as a count of autos which require judging) is displayed.  You may filter the list of autos by using the drop-down boxes or by using the Search field.  You can search by Auto ID, Auto Info, Judged, Judges or Your Score columns (Head Judges will see the Avg. Score column instead of the Your Score).  The Search box will return all matches where the text matches your search from any of the columns listed above.
    1. Example: to search for an auto id, type the auto id (i.e. 123) in the search box.
    2. Example: to show only 'Ford' in the auto info, type 'ford' in the search box.
    3. Example: to show only autos which have not been judged, type 'no' in the search box.
    4. Example: to sort the autos you have not judged, click the Your Score column (Avg. Score for Head Judges), which then displays all the autos with a score of '0' first, indicating you have not scored the auto.
  4. Select the Judge this Auto button for the auto you wish to score.  The steps below are the same as steps 3-7 listed in the Scanning the QR Code section above.
  6. Select a corresponding value for the first Judging Criteria.  On smartphones and tablets, a list of values should display at the bottom of the screen.  Select the value which best represents the value for the Judging Criteria for that auto.
  7. Use the right arrow or down arrow (varies between Operating Systems and Browsers) to move to the next Judging Criteria.
  8. Repeat for all remaining Judging Criteria.  Once all Judging Criteria have been populated, the Submit button will be enabled.
  9. Press the Submit button to complete the scoring for that auto.  You're done! You will be returned to the Judge Autos page.
